South By South West

"She went away for a holiday, said she's going to LA, but she never came back, they say…. the KKK took my baby away." Actually she went to Austin and met up with Morissey and swears shell never eat meat. All the same, I sat back with cerversa y fumar, and had a good time enjoying some different beats from the 80's to tomorrow, around the world and back.

On Wednesday I made my way out to Austin,Texas to partake in some festivities at off shoots, at this year's SXSW festival. I can say honestly that I did not get much R&R, and it was not on account of my wonderful hosts Mr. and Mr.'s. J.  I just spent way too much time rocking out to different beats with no boundaries.

I started the trip with a Belle & Sebastian set at the Granada Theater in Dallas, and then a Blackalicious set at the Gypsy in Deep Ellum. This was before I made it to Austin. Once I got to the state capital of Texas, I started out with some British Rock, Echo and the Bunnymen at a secret show, and old Smiths front man Morrissey at his secret show at Austin's Spoon, and then some corn-fed music from OKC's finest the Flaming Lips at their secret show. I can honestly say that these shows were not really much of a secret, at least in the sense of them being secretive and not completely bombarded with music industry types that want to be Devo Mod Rockers. Between secrets and over crowded venues, I did enjoy a calibration of great new artists just hitting the scene, at Cream Vintage's the bands We Are Scientists, and the Swedish rockers Division of Laura Lee. Don't cringe when I say Swedish rock, and think of bad 80's techno/Pop ABBA either, remember International Noise Conspiracy can claim Cold Sweden as their homeland, even if the Vikings do live in LA. Speaking of LA, E>K>U>K from the 'la ciudad of angels', defiantly raised the bar with not just a great performance either they had great style and a great sound as well I say "Right on!" to these guys for taking punk to it's roots. Clap Clap from San Marcus did it up also with their instrumental style punk, derived from sounds similar to At the Drive In, and Fugazi. After a couple days of West Coast music combined with Local Austin melodies, served with a Swedish Meatballs, I found myself reaching for something to hold me up in a bar on Sixth Street then to my dismay at Emos IV, I heard pleasant sounds coming from a flock of Canuks that graciously caught my attention they dropped some beats and some tunes that definitely helped hold me up as I tried desperately to pull off four days straight, and deal with Texas heat at the same time. Then sounds turned out coming from a project named 30 Islands, and they weren't bad. Later on in the week I met up with a few gals from ATL , the original dirty south, that have a promotional company called The Costume Party I missed their rainy day show, but had some good grinds all the same. Now I need some relaxation. If you missed this year SXSW, plan a trip for next year. This is where you go if you want to find something to listen to, or someone to stop and listen to you.
